A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TRIBES SURROUNDING THE GRAND CANYON THROUGH THE YEARS

TRIBES OF THE GRAND CANYON

Before Coronado came from Spain and well before European settlers moved west these people called the Grand Canyon area home for thousands of years. Archeological records show a history of people in the area for nearly 10,000 years

200 B.C. – 1500 A.D. 

ANASAZI

Puebloan people who lived along the rim of the canyon as well as the surrounding area known as the Colorado Plateau. They lived in adobe style houses built from rocks and clay or into the sides of the cliffs in the area

500 B.C. – Present Day

HOPI

"A Peaceful People"
Another Puebloan tribe known for their migratory travels. Eventually settling in the Northeastern part of Arizona and holding the Grand Canyon as a birthplace of the ancient people

1200 A.D.- Present Day 

HAVASUPAI

A smaller tribe which still inhabits the Grand Canyon. This tribe was an agricultural and hunting tribe. They would spend time in the lower parts of the canyon to grow crops and hunt on the upper rim areas
